What is bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon caused by microorganisms in the water that emit light when agitated, creating a glowing, magical effect in the dark.

How long is the tour?

The tour lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. It starts in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset and continues into the evening to witness the bioluminescence.

Is it safe to enter the water during the tour?

Yes, the tour takes place in calm waters and includes life jackets and all necessary safety equipment. Entering the water to experience the bioluminescence is optional but highly recommended.

We recommend bringing a swimsuit, towel, water shoes or sandals, comfortable clothing, insect repellent, and biodegradable sunscreen.

Can children join the tour?

Yes, children are welcome when accompanied by a responsible adult. The experience is safe, calm, and educational for the whole family.

Is the tour available year-round?

Yes, we offer the tour year-round. However, the best conditions are usually on nights with little or no moonlight. We recommend booking in advance to ensure availability.

Discover with us the magic of bioluminescence
Leaving our base in Montezuma at 4:20pm.
Skirting the Pacific coast to appreciate its beautiful scenery then we will have delicious fruits to enjoy the sunset at the paradisiacal Playa Muertos. And a few minutes after sunset we’ll sail to the exact spot where we can swim and experience the magical Bioluminescence.
Upon completing the tour in the village of Pochote we will have the transport waiting to bring you back to Montezuma or Santa Teresa by land.

There are only a few places in the world where bioluminescence can be seen year-round. And luckily for travelers to the Peninsula de Nicoya there is one such place here.
