What Are Dinoflagellates?

Dinoflagellates are tiny planktonic organisms that drift freely in the water. Although invisible during the day, millions of them can gather in the same area under the right environmental conditions.

When the water is disturbed by waves, fish, paddles, boats or even your own hands while swimming, these microscopic organisms emit a brief flash of blue light.

Scientists believe this reaction is a defense mechanism. The sudden flash may startle predators or attract larger animals that feed on them, giving the dinoflagellates a better chance of survival.

Does It Happen Every Night?

Why Does Bioluminescence Occur in Costa Rica?

Does the Moon Really Matter?

The darker the night, the easier it is to appreciate the glowing water.

For this reason, nights around the New Moon generally offer the best viewing conditions because there is less natural light reflecting on the ocean.

During a Full Moon, bioluminescence is still present, but the brighter moonlight can make it more difficult to see.
